Which is more accurate, point or serial dilutions?
When diluting semi-volatile organic standards, serial dilutions have less uncertainty by a factor of 66%, based on the uncertainty around diluting. This is due to the volume being measured as well as the decreased # of measurements needed to make your curve. The actual uncertainties that we have calculated for a 5 point curve of 160, 120, 80, 50 and 20 ug/ml is 1.92% for point and 1.28% for serial dilutions. This assumes, of course, that a minimum number of mixes is being used (such as our BIG Mixes) to make up your highest concentration standard prior to serial dilutions. The largest error in a point dilution scheme is human, when somebody speaks to you while using a syringe to measure out your 15th or 30th measurement. This cannot be added to uncertainty calculations.
Note: We have expressed the uncertainty as a % of the 5 point curve’s expected error.

New White Paper!
The Analysis of Laboratory and Consumer Water Sources for the Presence of BPA and Phthalates
SPEX CertiPrep has just released a new white paper on the presence of bisphenol-A (BPA) and phthalates in water from various laboratory and consumer sources.
The goal of the study was to examine the BPA and phthalate levels of several popular commercial bottled waters in comparison with municipal tap water and various samples of laboratory water from commercial sources and from de-ionized filtration systems. In addition, the study attempted to discover whether the phthalate and BPA levels increased after being heated for one week at temperatures equivalent to those reached inside an automobile during the summer.
NEW! We will be hosting a webinar on April 28 to present our findings and answer your questions about BPA and phthalates in water. If you would like to attend, register here for our 10AM or 2PM session (EDT). Space is limited, so sign up today!
You can read the abstract and view the presentation slides. To receive a copy of the full paper, please email crmsales@spexcsp.com or give us a call at 1-800-LAB-SPEX. |

Recommended reading: Green Chemistry
Here are two books you can use to learn how to decrease your lab's environmental footprint:
Methods and Reagents for Green Chemistry: An Introduction by Pietro Tundo (Editor), Alvise Perosa, and Fulvio Zecchini is "…a good starting resource for readers seeking to employ sustainable chemistry." (Journal of the American Chemical Society, January 9, 2008).
Green Chemistry Metrics by Alexei Lapkin (Editor) and David Constable (Editor). When devising green chemistry techniques, you need a way to evaluate their "greenness". This book will show you how.

Green Chemistry
The EPA's Green Chemistry Challenge promotes the "design of chemical products and processes that reduce or eliminate the use or generation of hazardous substances." There is only one Earth, and SPEX CertiPrep has embarked on an initiative to minimize our impact on the environment. We will investigate manufacturing techniques that are more environmentally friendly, find ways to minimize chemical waste, and reduce the paper waste generated by our offices. As we learn, we will be offering tips to you, the laboratories, to allow you to start your own green initiatives.
Stay tuned for more detailed information on our efforts!

Take our OQ/PV product survey and you could win an iPod!
We are getting ready to launch our new service, OQ/PV Custom Standards Kits, and we need your input! As recommended by Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), labs with analytical instruments should follow OQ/PV procedures to ensure their instruments are running in peak condition. Our OQ/PV Custom Standards Kits will be designed to provide your laboratory with a year supply of OQ/PV standards tailored specifically to your needs. We can manufacture the solutions in our ISO 9001-certified facility or you can send us your pre-made bulk solution. Either way, we will package the standards into single use sizes so you can be assured each individual standard will be homogeneous, free of contaminations, and consistent across the packaging run. Let us take the worry out of preparing standards!
Please take a few moments to complete our survey and let us know how to make these products better. Each submission will be entered into a drawing for a free iPod! Take the survey now… |
